Antique IOOF Intl Order of Odd Fellows Reverse Glass Painted Horse Brass Button
Antique IOOF Intl Order of Odd Fellows Reverse Glass Painted Horse Brass Button. Today we are happy to offer for sale a wonderful antique 19th century International Order of Odd Fellows reverse painted glass horse brass! A bit of info on the IOOF. Odd Fellows, or Oddfellows, also Odd Fellowship or Oddfellowship, is an international fraternity consisting of lodges first documented in 1730 in London. The first known lodge was called Loyal Aristarcus Lodge No. 9, suggesting there were earlier ones in the 18th century. Notwithstanding, convivial meetings were held in much revelry and, often as not, the calling of the Watch to restore order. Names of several British pubs today suggest past Odd Fellows affiliations.

In the mid-18th century, following the Jacobite risings, the fraternity split into the rivaling Order of Patriotic Oddfellows in southern England, favouring William III of England, and the Ancient Order of Oddfellows in northern England and Scotland, favouring the House of Stuart. Odd Fellows promote philanthropy, the ethic of reciprocity and charity; some grand lodges imply a Judeo-Christian affiliation. The American-based Independent Order of Odd Fellows enrolls some six hundred thousand members divided into approximately ten thousand lodges in thirty countries, and is interfraternally recognized by the British-based Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity. In total, members of all international branches combined are estimated in the millions worldwide. This rare 19th century horse brass was used for the decoration of a horse harness gear, especially for shire and parade horses.

Horse brasses became especially popular in England from the mid-19th century until their general decline alongside the use of the draft horse, and remain a collectors item today. The piece is finely crafted and detailed. It features a domed glass top beautifully reverse hand-painted with triple links and the all-seeing eye. The triple links are a recurring symbol among Odd Fellows internationally, connoting the motto of "Amicitia Amor et Veritas"; English: Friendship, Love and Truth. The all-seeing eye reminds Odd Fellows that God watches them always. When the all-seeing eye is in the center of a cloud, it means God (and we should) see the suffering in the world and be moved to sympathy for human woe. The glass dome is mounted to a brass frame with holder bar on reverse side for mounting on harness. Horse brass presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear, tarnish, oxidation and patina commensurate with age. This rare painted glass horse brass will make a wonderful addition to any antique Odd Fellows memorabilia collection... Dimensions: 1-3/4" in diameter, 1" in depth.
