MIJO KOVACIC- Master Zima Croatian Naive Art, reverse glass paintings
Photo #1: "Zima" (Winter); Replica of famous "Babin Kut" painting. By: MIJO Kovacic: The Master. Sight size: 17"x17" (glass). Photo #3: Mijo Kovacic, Jim Nannen and my friend Vladimir at The Croatian National Museum of Naive Art.

Photo #4: Mijo Kovacic and Jim Nannen beside one of his famous paintings. Photo of our original gallery in St. Mijo Kovacic is one of the greatest of all time Croatian naive artists. This is the only painting of his I currently have for sale. If you check Peter Infeld's book "Mijo Kovacic" you will find a picture of Kovacic's famous "Babin Kut" painting.

This is quite like it. Kovacic must have had good memories of this location. The plaque pictured is one given to our gallery by the Croatian Embassy in Washington D. Prior to our closing in 2011 and was in recognition of the fact that we were the largest gallery in the western hemisphere specializing only in Croatian Naive Art!

In the year 2000, the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Introduced a 90 day exhibit titled "The Fantastical World of Croatian Naïve Art" to the. Record crowds and rave reviews. It was there that I fell in love with Croatian Naïve reverse oil on glass paintings.

Petersburg entitled "The Art of the Hlebine School" that would run from May 31 to August 29. To make a long story short, I made arrangements to travel to Croatia to attend the grand opening ceremonies of the exhibit. Half way into the first day and after having more than one masterfully done painting pulled from behind a dresser or from under a bed, I decided that this story was to important not to be brought to the United States. I was going to open a gallery as soon as I could and bring this fantastic art form from these wonderful artists to America! I was back in Croatia, this time with my wife Donna, for the last week of the exhibit in August 2005 and together we toured other parts of the Croatian countryside, so to this date I have personally met with and bought beautiful paintings from at least 50 of this talented group of Croatian Naïve Artists.

We operated our gallery in St. Petersburg for five years, but the Great Recession of 2007-11 made us think twice about continuing and we closed our gallery at The Pier in St. Petersburg in the fall of 2011. This brings me up to the present.

Please remember, when you see these paintings you are witnessing something very special. These paintings are not production line prints, "artist enhanced" or "embellished" lithographs or serigraphs, giclee prints or photographs.

They are unique originals; one-of-a-kind reverse oil on glass paintings seldom offered like this anywhere much less in America.
