Incredibly rare painting on reverse glass of the sinking of the Titanic on April 2, 1912. Painting is extremely old and fragile. We believe it to date to shortly after the sinking because it lists the loss of life as'1600. The actual loss of life was determined to be 1,514 but this was not known for several weeks after the disaster and the newspaper early accounts were giving wildly different figures. To list the loss as'1600' indicates this painting to be possibly one of the earliest artistic depictions of the disaster.
Paint is pulling away from the back of the glass and the frame shows a lot of wear but miraculously the glass has not been broken. To find a painting of the disaster from this early is are enough but to have it painted in reverse on glass makes it incredibly rare. When it was originally displayed there was most likely a light source in the back which made it appear even more ghostly and riveting. A light blue backing has been put against the glass on the back of the painting to minimize the missing parts. Painting measures 20 x 16.Frame measures 27 1/2 x 23 1/2. We present clear descriptions and earnestly work to note any faults. Things to keep in mind.
