Is the highly revered Hindu deity, Krishna, one of the ten avatars or incarnations of Vishnu. He is the symbol of love, devotion and joy, famous for his love of Radha, infamous for cavorting amongst the gopis, milkmaids , in Vrindavan, Mathura. Krishna's celebration of the lotus, the symbol of purity , is significant. It symbolises self-creation or supernatural origin, and held in high regard by Hindus and Buddhists alike. In Hinduism, for example, Brahma the creator is depicted sitting on a lotus that has burst forth from Vishnu's navel.

This is an example of Indian reverse glass. Painting at its most detailed , vibrant best , its authentic Art Deco period frame finished in distressed patterned.

It's very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of painters recreate images that have gone before with, no doubt, Indian miniatures used as inspiration. Tradition, an engraving is laid down on the back of the glass before water or gum arabic paints are applied.

This is then fired in a kiln ensuring the paint bonds permanently with the glass. Known as reverse glass painting for obvious reasons, they are noted for their sheer brilliance, stunning clarity, stunning colours and liberal use of gilding , as here.
